Sculpture as a statement

March 18 2016

Chronologically speaking, this is the last few days in Wellington. As to what I have seen, noticed, photographed and enjoyed, I am still near the beginning of the trip. So much!

There is a lot of sculpture and painting in this wonderful country. Graffiti is quite a big factor too.

I've enjoyed both the serious and the whimsical. Some things I've seen, i don't know what to make of, others appeal to my sense of humour and some are just beautiful.

Shall we begin?

This is a series of sculptures that were at the Te Papa Museum the last time I was here, six years ago. They have now been moved to the Botanical gardens, where they fit in very nicely, though they are harder to see against the natural background rather than the stern walls of the Museum.
They are by a sculptor named Regan Gentry.

It's mainly the Rose garden and tea room in the background as you walk down a switchback pathway to the roses.

They are a structure of some kind of heavy wire.

As most of this city is one giant staircase, time is taken to contemplate breathing.

In a way, this screen/shade solution is a sculpture. I masks a fairly ugly building with a great design.

A monster lizard sculpture at the zoo. I enjoyed my walk in the grounds of the zoo, but did not enjoy the sense of enclosure for the animals. I think I am over zoos.

A very long bus ride to the end of the line in New Brighton, a very long walk along the beach to the big Center, a funny lunch (don't get sandwiches with pickles chopped in) and a long ride back. We saw a lot of random house destruction, where liquifaction had affected whole areas. Condemed forever.

A series of sculptures, being done outdoors in New Brighton, on the coast outside of Christchurch.

A type of white stone stuff, nice, naive, touching. I loved them. The workbench was in amongst the shrubbery.

Baby seal, pretty much life sized.

This is my favourite. A Willendorf.

These are the best use, re-use of silos I have ever seen. They are architecture but also sculpture/installations to me. They were being used aa a hoster-hotel.

Just fun. I wonder if they are very hot inside on a sunny day?

The office - below.

We were driving from Akaroa toward Ashbourne. So many things along this very touristy road.

This made me think of the giant Musky in Northern Ontario. I love giant things!

In the Port of Littleton. They made me think of the ones by Douglas Coupland.

We took a ferry ride from Littleton to Diamond Harbour. A wonderful walk along steep wooded slopes, a lovely lunch in a funky cafe and then back down to the ferry. We found these sculptures on the walk.

This pair of photos below was such a beautiful bronze. I took it from two angles because it looked different from each perspective.

Back in Christchurch for a couple of days before returning to Wellington, I found a few more civic works. Not sure what the meaning of this could be. It was new, so must have something to say about the earthquake.

This was just fun. Sculpture, lighting, both?

Well, as far as sculture to this point in the trip, that's it. There is still Auckland and I am sure I will find much to show you.
