On to Christchurch

March 3rd 2016

So, we are off to the South Island. Christchurch is our first destination. A city destroyed by an earthquake 5 years ago, it is off to a Re-Start.
The amount of rebuilding is amazing, the amount left to do is staggering.
Insurance issues hold up some of the large projects and people are afraid to invest I'm sure.
The randomness of what fell and what did not is mind boggling.

Re-Start village. Containers at their best. Innovative, fun and creating a vibe that is alive and hopeful.
What an opportunity to re-invent all the things that weren't working that well before.

The building we heard about the most. The Cathedral. Mostly destroyed, with two camps, one to restore, one to start afresh.

The Arts Center, woefully damaged, but considered such an icon that is has to be restored.

A beautiful little building holding all kinds of plants. It's really a shelter to stand under while looking at the west wall of the cathedral, as it could fall down and you need to be protected

The cardboard cathedral, made of Sonotube. All sorts of parts, using all sizes of tube. The base around the cathedral is made with shipping containers.

The basement of one of the destroyed buildings, filled with water and plastic ducks!

There are beautiful parks and wonderful gardens and I will do another posting with pictures of all of those.
