Back in Wellington.

April 1st 2016

Last week in Wellington.

We are both a bit tired from all our running around but still get out to see a lot of different things.

The geology is really interesting. Folds, crumples, uplifts. This is along the street to my sister's house. I always stopped to look at it.

We went up to where the Wind Turbine used to be. There as of the last time I was here, now dismantled, but still the logo and mascot for the town of Brooklyn.

Brooklyn's streets are all named after American presidents, or places in America. It is quite cute with a movie theater in the center of everything. I walk up there one day, just to remind myself of where it was.

Remind me to show you a variety of classic Villas. There are so many designs and variations.

This one is not a classic villa, but one with an interesting design for it's time. A well known designer lived in this house.

Lovely entrance.

Loud and sassy, quiet and dignified.

In need of some TLC. Fresh painted

We went walking up into the area where the turbine used to be and found another feed of blackberries. So many. Ate till we could manage no more.

There are spectacular views from the highest point. While we were there, there was a women's cross country bicycle race going on. Very intimidating in the bravery required to point the bicycle straight downhill and just go.

The intrepid bike riders. I could barely look down the path they tackled!

Another day, we drive to Lyall Bay to go to a cafe called the Spruce Goose. It is right at the side of the airport. Really. Huge cargo planes just the other side of the fence.
A walk on the beach after too much coffee and sweet sweets is a cure all.

On the days where I am on my own, I seem to go in search of great looking cafes. There are a lot and
I represent only a few here.

A visit to Porirua, where I had bought some Tapa cloth before, only to find the museum so changed I did not recognize it.

A different day, I go to up into the Hutt Valley, to Lower Hutt to visit the Dowse. This is a very nice regional museum that had some fun exhibitions this time around.

The work of Liu Jianhua

Great Maori carving with Paua shell in the eyes.

Just a nice big Dog?

A few things seen while out and about.

An old Ford truck on the streets of Wellington.

A Jensen Interceptor on a street of all car and Motorcycle mechanics.

Everyone these days seems to have free wifi. This is great for keeping in touch. The thing I have really noticed, in this world of walk around internet, is the lack of printed maps. All the city maps that we got during our travels covered the downtown, but did not cover a little further afield. During our driving trip, this was a bit of a problem for those times without a printer to be able to have a Google road map to follow. Small rant.

Architectural or decor details are what make me notice buildings. Little, or big things to appreciate.

Sculpture of the top of columns-drain pipes? I wasn't sure.

Just a fun shop front.

An old Ciy Works building, in the middle of all sorts of new things.

I even managed to visit the local Tip that had it's own  Treasure Trove store. Now I know where to go to replace the broken microwave glass dish. This place was a lot of fun though the musty smell was a bit much.

A visit to the Te Papa museum area yielded some carvings in this wonderful public area.

I finished up any projects I had and started my packing for the trip to Auckland. This would be the end of my trip in Wellington. The last six days would be spent visiting Auckland.

Leaving from here, where my sister lives.

Leaving for Canada from Auckland. Sad thought.

Next time? A train ride.
